PLAYING "luthang-luthang"

When you were young, have you experienced playing in the streets with other kids? Could you recall those years when you were just playing all day long without thinking of any responsibilities at all? Do you have happy or sad memories when you were young? Either way around, there is no doubt that you experienced playing games with your friends or acquiantances or just playing inside your house. This helps develop the bond of friendship; wherein, these same people will stay with you for life and remain friends forever.

The picture above will show you how kids enjoyed to play with other kids not just plainly toys. But this kind of game is in a little way harsh. If you are from the Philippines, you are familiar with this game. It is called "luthang-luthang." The game is played by two groups each composing a number of members. They have this weapon called "luthang" to defend themselves from the other group. Its like they are having war with one other and "luthang" is their gun. "Luthang" is made of bamboo stick. The substance that is used as bullet for the "luthang" is papaya fruit. Each group will run against the other to hit a member of said group and vice-versa. They then prepare themselves in battle and then attack. To these children, to be hit by the bullet papaya fruit is nothing to them. The more they are hit the more they will face their opponents. They enjoyed to play the game regardless of the pain. There is no exact time and date when this kind of game is played by the chilren here. The fact is the game is played every year and you will just prepare yourself too for the possibility of many children running toward you.

Hi, Bestre...
As reading your message in Yuwie I just visit your blog. "Luthang-luthang" seems to be a funny game for kids. Yeah... liked it too when I was a boy. There is a similar hand-made toy with yours in my country Indonesia, especially in Java island where I live in now. But the bullet is made from casava leaves or "lamtoro" flower.
It's so rare now to find kids playing that game as there are many manufactured toys with modern style. I afraid, those kind of traditional toys will collapse as kids prefer to buy toys than to make them by their own hands and creativity.

Good post, Bestre! Thanks for sharing it.

God bless!

i think this game is played only by children who came from a family who is not that well-to-do.

the important thing is they enjoyed it very much.
